Understanding Your Medicare Coverage
Generally, Medicare Part A covers most hospital costs after a deductible is met. (Other restrictions may apply.) Medicare Part B covers 80% of outpatient and physician services, but has NO prescription benefits. Medicare Supplemental Insurance or "Medi-Gap" insurance plans are currently designed to cover the remaining 20%. Some have limited prescription benefits. However keep in mind that there will be a MediCare Part D in 2006 which will offer prescription benefits for an additional monthly premium. Click here for more information about Pharmacy benefits.
With Medicare Part C Advantage, or HMO coverage, your Medicare benefits are assigned to your selected HMO and there is no need for a supplemental insurance plan. Many Medicare assigned HMOs offer comprehensive healthcare coverage including Generic prescription benefits and limited coverage on Brand name drugs. As an HMO beneficiary, however, you will not have a free choice of physician or hospital, and may have other limitations of benefits.
